Every motorcyclist should and probably knows that there is a high risk of being involved in an accident. It is not necessarily always the fault of the motorcyclist, rather it’s a combination of the interaction of human factors, both the motorcyclists and other drivers, as well as environmental factors. Motorcycle accidents occur for various reasons, and it is hard to call them typical, however, there is an important distinction- more than 80% of motorcycle accidents result in serious injury of death of the motorcyclist.

Why Motorcycle Accidents Cause Such Serious Injuries?

Motorcycle injuries tend to be very serious due to lack of protection of the driver. The motorcycle itself is a heavy and fast vehicle and provides no protection to the rider nor passenger. One of the most common patterns of injury is the ejection from the motorcycle. How does this occur? When motorcycle suddenly stops (for example- crashes into another object), the rider will be ejected from the motorcycle and will strike objects and the ground. This is the typical pathway of attaining serious injuries.

Why Motorcycle Accidents Are More Serious and Expensive?

Since motorcycle accidents are usually very serious, recovery from these injuries will take more time and therefore cost more. Insurance data has shown that:

  • 23% of motorcycle claimants have injuries to multiple parts of the body;
  • 18% of claimants have suffered head injuries resulting in permanent disability
  • 10% of claimants have injured spine, resulting in permanent paraplegia or quadriplegia.

These statistics show an astonishing number- 50% of motorcycle accident claimants have experienced life-threatening and life-altering injuries.
