2. 1949 E90 AJS Porcupine – $7 Million
The AJS company had a rich history and winning racetrack heritage, but after some financial troubles it managed to produce only 4 Porcupine units in 1949, and only one of these was driven by Les Graham who, if you recall, won the 1949 World Championship.
It is distinct for its open frame, aluminum alloy, 500cc, DOHC twin engine with horizontal cylinders and heads. Then there is its famous low center of gravity, “Jam-pot” shocks and Teledraulic race forks for which it is still remembered.
This one managed to live throughout the Cold War and got “stored” for twenty years in the Coventry National Motorcycle Museum.
